AUDITIONS 2022

ABOUT US
The Co-op Juniors Theatre Company is one of the largest youth theatre groups in the UK. We work with young people from any and every background to produce vibrant, innovative and original theatre across east Suffolk’s top venues.

ABOUT AUDITIONS

THEATRE COMPANY MEMBERSHIP

You are auditioning for a one year membership with the Co-op Juniors Theatre Company. Our one year Theatre Company Membership (September 2022 – July 2023) provides the opportunity to perform in two large-scale productions and receive 20 hours of specialised performance training alongside rehearsals.

Our company is comprised of two casts: Junior and Senior.

Both casts come together to create the Co-op Juniors Christmas Spectacular! at the internationally renowned Snape Maltings Concert Hall, now in its 17th year!
In the Summer months, our two casts perform in exciting musical productions with 2023 being no exception!

CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG JR. will take flight with our Junior Cast at Seckford Theatre in May 2023.
WEST SIDE STORY will explode onto the stage with our Senior Cast at Snape Maltings Concert Hall in July 2023

We only cast production roles once the membership year has started in September, so all our members have an equal chance; inevitably some people receive larger roles than others but everyone is part of a close ensemble. Creating a strong, cohesive company is one of the most important parts of the Co-op Juniors Theatre Company as it is an important skill that lies at the centre of the professional industry and is a crucial part of any young performer’s education.

As a theatre company member, you will attend weekly rehearsals.

Junior Cast rehearse twice a week on Thursday evenings 6PM – 8PM and Sunday mornings 11:00AM – 1:00PM.

Senior Cast rehearse three times a week on Thursday & Friday evenings 6PM – 9/9:30PM and Sundays 10AM – 4PM.

This may seem like a lot, but not everyone is called to every rehearsal. We also keep your half terms and school holidays free of any rehearsals!

Included during the membership year are 20 hours of specialist Technique Classes. These classes are designed to develop core technique skills in all aspects of musical theatre performance and be adaptive to support ongoing rehearsals. These classes include dance, body conditioning & flexibility, singing, drama and audition technique… all delivered by our creative team and guest industry professionals.

FEES
One year Theatre Company Membership is £300.
The membership fee for any additional siblings is £275.

We enable all members to spread the costs of membership across three months, from July auditions to the end of September.

ADDTIONAL COSTS
Uniform, dance footwear, show make-up, some costume elements & accessories, production DVD’s & photography USB sticks.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT
As a charity, our priority is to keep all our fees and costs to a minimum. Rest assured that nobody will ever be excluded for financial reasons. The following outlines the support we can offer.

● The membership fee can be broken down into smaller instalments across 6 months, from July to December.
● We operate a bursary scheme that offers bursaries of up to 75% of the membership fee.
● We always seek to help with the provision of uniform, dance shoes or costume construction, where possible.

Once membership offers are sent out in July, you will need to complete the Financial Support Application Form (which will be included in your offer pack), and return it to us by the specified deadline. We examine each case individually to ensure we are being as fair as possible, and there is a section on the form to note down any additional details you feel may be relevant to your case.

AUDITIONS FAQS

Each audition is a 2-hours group creative workshop led by our creative team. They will be looking to gauge how well you dance, sing, act. We are searching for people with determination, ambition, energy, authenticity, creativity and a willingness to give it everything! You don’t need to have any prior experience whatsoever; we are looking for potential!

Please arrive 10-15 minutes in advance. At the beginning of the audition workshop you will meet the team, and they will talk you through what to expect. You will be asked to participate in a warm up, take part in some fun dance exercises and finally, you’ll learn a short routine. You’ll then perform the routine you have just learned in smaller groups.
In the second half of the workshop you’ll learn a song together and sing the song in smaller groups. You will also have the opportunity to sing part of the song on your own if you wish. We encourage everyone to give this a go!

Everyone has different levels of experience, and our audition workshops are designed to support that. The creative team will help you understand what is needed of you, but please make sure you commit fully to everything. Often, we’re looking as much at your attitude and approach as your skill and experience. So be willing to try new things and be brave.

The Co-op Juniors Theatre Company audition workshop is a very friendly and supportive environment for young people to explore their creative abilities. Don’t get too caught up in ‘getting it right’ – the panel are looking to see the effort you put in, the quality of your movement, how you respond to the music – lots of things aside from whether you get the steps right. Really listen and watch the creative leading the audition to understand the detail of what they’re teaching you and where they want you to focus – details of dynamics, or performance notes are important.

All three disciplines, singing, dancing and acting, are taken equally into consideration when casting our membership, so give everything a really good go. If you’re feeling anxious, don’t hide at the back – the creative leading the session can’t see you and you can’t see them. Come forward, make sure you have space, and throw yourself into the session.

The audition workshop is two hours long AND is free of charge!

Registration will close on Sunday 19 June 2022.

Everyone will be given a mark for acting, singing and dancing which are made during your audition. After your audition the creative team meet for a casting session to match the most suitable performers to the skills required for our productions.
We’ll then prepare offer packs and emails to go out to everyone by the end of July. Please bear with us during this time and we will be in touch as soon as we can.

You may be successful and receive an offer to join the Co-op Juniors Theatre Company or you may not make it this time. Please don’t be disheartened if you don’t receive an offer, there are plenty of other opportunities to get involved with the Co-op Juniors, especially through our Theatre Academy and half-term workshops! We’ll also provide specific feedback and advice from your audition so you know where you can improve, if requested.

We will always send results via email, so please make sure you register with your correct contact details and keep an eye on your email account including your junk-mail!

If you have any further questions please get in touch with our Artistic Director, Oliver Brett (oliver.brett@coopjuniors.co.uk).
